HWBOT Country Cup looking to be the most popular OC contest ever organised how is your country fairing

HWBOT is in its 5th edition of the famous Country Cup competition where overclockers from nations worldwide compete to give their country the best chance of walking away with the highest honours. HWBOT is saying they are expecting submission numbers to surpass the most popular Country Cup 2011 competition considerably this year.

Being an Australian I can tell you we love our sports and do pretty well against the big guns despite being a relatively small nation (size of population). Overclocking is just like any other “sport”, it has its stats and ranking systems that immediately give you an idea how well (or badly) you stack up against others.

How about you jump over to the competition first and check it out. Here is the web page you need to go to.

Countdown timer gives you an indication how long a time there is left. Currently we’re looking just over a month to go. The leaderboard is tightly stacked and some of the countries are there that always do well and then there are a few surprises. Australia is one of those countries that has not faired too well in the past finishing well down the ladder in 30+ spots. Well, this year things are different. Boys from OCAU HWBOT team and Team Australia Extreme OC team are joining forces and looking for a strong finish.

Americans have also not been as active in this comp in the past but this year they are looking very strong. The usual suspects of Germany and Indonesia are in top 5. We are yet to see some of the previous champions including Romanian, Greek and Polish teams step up their game. I have no doubt the leaderboard will take many twists and turns yet, best to keep an eye on the latest submissions and team movements daily. I love checking out people’s OC rig setup pics that are compulsory in result submissions. I’ll put up a couple of cool shots here!

GIGABYTE is the proud sponsor of Country Cup competition and is offering some nice prizes for the winners as are other companies including G.Skill, Intel and Cooler Master.

Thumbs up to all and have fun.

Gaming tournaments getting close to the US 10 million prize money mark Olympics next!

New era of sports tournaments is upon us and it’s growing exponentially. I know this sounds unbelievable but I can see how Olympics will have a gaming tournament element in not too distant a future.

Alright, I’ve said it. E-Sport will one day be just as big and popular as just about any other sport we currently have at Olympics. I can see the 40+ year old’s cringing now and blurting out one liners, “when I was a kid, we used to…”. Those days are long gone! I was in the transitional phase so I should know a thing or two. My generation is the first of its kind to grow up with gaming platforms such as Spectrum, Commodore64, Amiga, Atari, PCs and many others. I am showing my age here but it’s worth reminiscing about those all-nighters me and my friends put in playing all sorts of games. Competing in the virtual world and getting a taste for something new, something exciting that no one has experienced in our history.

Physical sports have been around for a very long time and technology has opened our minds to new possibilities, new ways to compete and have new lifestyles. Attitudes are changing from generation to generation as most of us from the first “gamer” generation have grown up now and have our own kids. Our kids now have taken gaming to a whole new level and it is literally becoming a professional sport with pro teams, team managers, sponsors, huge prize pools and big audiences. Gamers are becoming celebrities in their own right and they are the role models to a lot of kids. The technology at the same time is also much more accessible from simple iPods and Android phones to consoles and PCs. Some of the “old” gamers are now team managers or sponsors or supporting fathers and mothers of these crazy kids. Before long we’ll be the grandparents and will tune in to watch some some Korean dude slaying everyone in Dota 5 LOL Open-mouthed smile

Our friends from MEKA.Tt eSPORTS page put up a stunning graph showing where the tournament prize money has sky rocketed to currently and it is only going to get bigger! It’s pretty clear that Dota2 and League of Legends are the games predominantly driving this push and what they both have in common is they are easily accessible, inexpensive and can be played on very basic hardware due to such strong technological advances of recent time.

This is not a new idea that I am discussing here but it is one that has opened up to me in the last couple of years as a real possibility for someone who is in the industry and is sponsoring professional gaming teams and can see such a large amount of young generations investing serious amounts of time into this hobby. I ended up coming across a petition website today which has close to 100K signatures for gaming to becoming part of Olympics. I guess there are another 100K likeminded individuals out there who share my views and I didn’t even sign that petition! Phew!

There are still a lot of hurdles that present themselves for future gamers. One is internet infrastructure which is a very important aspect for some types of games. I remember speaking to the best Counter Strike and other FPS (First Person Shooter) gamers in Australia and getting told that ping times (essentially internet/game response times) affect a lot how well you can play online against other people. It was also evident that some of the best players were in healthy internet infrastructure countries such as USA, Northen Europe (Sweden, Finland, etc) or Korea. This is one area which will drastically improve over the next decade as many countries are now investing in this type of infrastructure. Places such as USA (Google fiber), UK, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Indonesia, etc, all have plans in near future to improve in this area.

TV coverage is another major change that will probably evolve over time. Every time I travel to Taiwan for work, I am surprised to see video gaming channels dedicated to competitive gaming because Australia is still so far behind the times when it comes to that. You would expect otherwise as we certainly don’t lack gamers here. It’s just not reached that level yet I think. It will and that will be the major break through.

The real question is will gaming be included in Olympics by 2024 or before that, enjoy your weekend guys and happy fragging!

GIGABYTE’s future 7 series motherboards – worth the upgrade!

This week we uploaded our 7 series mobo microsite that includes all of the features and technology available to you if you upgrade from your Z68 or older GIGABYTE motherboard to a new Z77 or H77 series board.

image

Two key features are GIGABYTE’s 3D BIOS and 3D Power that brings our dual UEFI BIOS and All Digital Power technologies to the socket LGA 1155 platform. 3D BIOS has a 3D mode that’s easy enough for everyone to use, while also boasting an advanced mode for overclockers and other advanced users. Here’s a screenshot of the new 3D BIOS in 3D mode:

image

3D Power offers maximum control over the power to the four main power zones that are the CPU, processor graphics, memory and VTT. There is more information about our 3D Power utility on the 3D Power web page.

image

These 7 series mobos also see the introduction of a new dual band WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 card that will go a long way towards making your desktop PC the center of your personal cloud.

image

And then there is also the widespread adoption of Ultra Durable 4 and other GIGABYTE motherboard technologies such as 1 fuse per USB port, On/Off Charge, 3x USB Power and mSATA onboard.

image  image

A list of models that will be available globally can be found in the ‘Models’ section of the microsite.

Of course, there are a lot of new technologies missing from this microsite, in particular those that will be unlocked by the new 3rd Generation of Intel® Core™ processors that will available in the spring (northern hemisphere) of 2012. Stay tuned for more updates from CeBIT where Stew is manning our booth and demoing these new technologies.

Christian Ney SMASHES the global memory frequency world record with GIGABYTE A75 UD4H!

You don’t see this every day I must say. Overclockers push their systems so hard to reach the ultimate frequency and give it absolutely every last bit of “juice” and cold to extract the most they can out of their hardware.

Christian Ney from Switzerland did a remarkable job yesterday smashing the global RAM frequency on the Llano based GIGABYTE A75-UD4H. Yes that’s right, he beat the big boys (with their 990FX boards) using a GIGABYTE Llano board which are meant to be low end.

Now that’s overclocking!!!

normal_IMG_0050

Christian did a writeup on OCAHOLIC website, check it all out HERE and HWBOT submission can be found HERE

Final result was a RAM frequency of 1868.3MHz (DDR3-3737) FAINTS!!!

GIGABYTE Z77N WIFI powers Project Ayr The latest Jeffrey Stephenson Creation

193

Firstly, let’s get one thing clear: Jeffrey Stephenson is not a case modder. He does not modify cases. Jeffrey designs and hand-builds small form factor PCs inspired by art-deco and other classic genres, using materials such as teak, mahogany and basswood. The results can only be described as breath-taking.

The latest build is known as Project Ayr. Based on the GIGABYTE Z77N-WIFI motherboard, Project Ary is described in Jeffrey’s own words as “…a solid state, fanless, no-moving-parts, dead silent home theater PC in aluminum and mahogany. Features include Intel HD4000 graphics and an Intel Cherryville SSD.”

SSDs prices gradually dropping to below the 1 GB mark

seagate_pulsar_ssd-540x349

It seems that just in the last month or so we’re started to see SSD vendors drop their prices a little. Manufacturers like OCZ, Kingston, ADATA, Crucial and others that compete in the mainstream consumer space, have started to drop prices on many of their products to the point where the milestone $1/GB point is starting to become reality.

Here is a chart that caught my attention on Anandtech which shows the prices on NewEgg for a range of SSD products from various vendors at the three most common capacity points; 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB:

SSD-Prices

This chart doesn’t cover all SSD vendors, but it does illustrate the gradual drop in prices that we’re seeing at the moment. There are plenty of places on the chart that flirt quite closely with the $1/GB price point, and even some that are just under. Several other SSD manufacturers like Kingston, Corsair, Samsung, MemoRight, Plextor and Transcend also have drives float around these price points.

Check out this chart that shows the price per GB of several featured 128GB capacity drives - for me the ideal capacity for an Win 7 install:

SSD-Prices-2

This is great news for DIY PC builders. Sure the absolute fastest SSDs on the market will cost you more, but the important point for me is that there are many millions of systems out in the wild that are still running off traditional 7,200rpm drives. These PCs could all enjoy a fairly inexpensive, yet exponential performance leap by upgrading an SSD. Intel Smart Response is will remain an attractive option for folks on SSD capacities below 64GB, but with these new prices, the attraction to opt for a full OS install on SSD has never been stronger.

The charts in this blog can be found on an interesting SSD review article here on Anandtech.com

Sin0822 reviews the GIGABYTE Z77X UD5H motherboard

Following up on his physical inspection of our brand new Z77X-UD5H, power user and all round motherboard expert Sin0822 has now published his full and complete performance review, covering pretty much every performance-related aspect possible.

94511510

Here’s a sample of what Sin has to say:

“If you are looking for a Z77 board without headaches and great performance and overclocking, take a look no further than the Z77X-UD5H. At $200 without Wifi & BT, and $230 with the Wifi& BT the price and performance of this proper Z77 board are hard to beat. GIGABYTE could have easily charged more, but this time I guess they are being really nice.”

You can check the full review at several forums where Sin can be found, including xtremesystems.org, overclocker.net, tweaktown.com, overclockers.com.au, overclockers.com and Sin’s very own site SinHardware.com

And don;t forget you can check out full specs and features on the GIGABYTE Z77X-UD5H board here.
